Business Seasons are Different than Calendar Seasons
By PRP on Aug 14, 2008 in Business
You know the basic seasons of the year and where they fall on the calendar, right? Well throw that knowledge right out the window if you’re working in any kind of business that might offer seasonal merchandise. The business calendar for seasons is set at least a few weeks (and sometimes the better part of a year) in advance of the actual season.
An example of this would be the wedding stationery store that offers customized wedding invitations to people who are getting married at specific times throughout the year. Wedding invitations must be sent out months in advance of the wedding. This means that you can’t stock up on beach wedding invitations in the summer; you need to be thinking about Christmas wedding invitations during the warm months and you’ll bring out the beach invitations when it starts to get cold. Of course, you can maintain a stock supply of non-seasonal contemporary wedding invitations but you should still be aware of seasonal differences in what customers might want.
There are some industries that are more prone to seasonal changes than others. The fashion industry starts putting out its collections well in advance of the season the clothes will actually be needed in. The magazine industry has deadlines months ahead of the season being reported on. But even smaller businesses should take seasonal changes into consideration and plan a new calendar accordingly.
