The Shopping Cart: Your Virtual Storefront

You have your product, you have your website - now the only area left before you open shop is finding the right shopping cart for website.

Surprisingly enough, many eBusiness owners put very little thought into their storefront shopping carts. They’ll look at the demo, view the pretty colors and design, and give no thought at all to the actual features of the cart.

Dealing with the look and graphics of a shopping cart is easy. Most shopping carts, like Zen Cart, include image files you modify in Photoshop. The hard part is adding features to your cart, which often requires modifying code. Unless you’re a programmer, coding is difficult and often frustrating.

Make sure your shopping cart is as close to what you need as possible. Some key points to consider are:

Is it compatible with your server?
Is it easy to install?
Does the shopping cart support major credit cards or PayPal?
What kind of support is included with the cart?

Many website hosting services offer their own shopping carts or a choice of the most popular ones. Installation is as easy as a click of a button. If you choose to install your own shopping cart from an outside source, the task is a little more difficult but still fairly easily done.

And if you don’t like the cart after you’ve installed it, you can easily uninstall the program and try another.
