Credibility and Online Degrees

Congratulations! Completing your online college degree is a fulfilling feeling. You’re full of pride, ready to face the world, properly armed with what you need to get a better job and embark on your new career path. You took the initiative to complete your higher education, putting time and lots of effort to get your online degree. Now you’re ready to put that education to the test.

So why isn’t anyone taking you seriously?

You would think that employers appreciate the fact you have the dedication and commitment to see a goal to completion. Unfortunately, many employers tend to dismiss online college degrees in favor of degrees from physical schools.

Here are some of the cons associated with online college degrees:

Lack of interaction with other students/professors
Online education is still too new a concept
Separating quality online schools from lesser ones is difficult

Here are some pros to pitch to your future employer:

Online programs require more participation from students and require more communication overall.
Instant messenger (IM), email and discussion boards all contribute to honing a student’s communication skills.
Shy people find a new confidence online, and they embrace that confidence to bring it to the workplace.

Online degrees may still be a relatively new concept, but they involve more dedication and determination than other formal learning locations. Most people taking an online course do so because it fits their schedule. These people often have a job, family and plenty going on in their lives - yet they made time to do something important for themselves.

When these factors are taken into consideration, it’s clear which candidate for is the better one.
