I love conventions. They’re a great opportunity to learn new things and see the latest developments in an industry. However, my favorite part about them is always the people that I meet.

For example, at a design convention that I attended a few years back, I had the opportunity to meet a pair of Florida custom luxury home builders. We became friends because they’re really interesting people and we have a lot in common. But I have to admit that there have been a lot of additional benefits to being friends with luxury home builders in Florida.

One of the major benefits is that they have helped offer design advice for improvements on my own home. They didn’t actually custom-design my renovation for me, but their input definitely helped to guide the direction that I took. I love the new look of my home and definitely have them (and my own builders, of course) to thank for that.

But the biggest benefit of being friends with these Florida custom home builders has been the opportunity to visit them. They’ve got a beautiful home of their own design right off of the beach in Florida and I’ve found an excuse to go stay there more than once. During my trips, they’ve always taken me to see the new homes that they’re working on, homes that are always beautiful and inspiring.

I’m not saying that we should befriend people in certain industries just because of the benefits to us. However, there’s no harm in making buddies with people who provide us with cool opportunities. Conventions are a great place to find those people!
